Chaparral began raising horses in 1957 and acquired our first Welsh Pony, Talybont Blue Belle, in 1964. After Blue Belle was trained to show in halter and became a Champion, she was trained under saddle, hunt seat, western, trail, pleasure driving, roadster, lead line and jumping. Blue Belle became a 3 time National Champion for Chaparral Stud Farm.
Blue Belle was bred to Grand Champion *Criban Button B. The new foal, Chaparral's Sabrina, won our hearts and the Welsh breed won our dedication. Sabrina was later purchased by Ben Bottoms who trained her under saddle and in harness. Ben ultimately sold her to Ardmore Stud, Ontario, Canada where she became a replacement for her granddam, Grand Champion *Gretton Sunlight.
Sabrina was honored at the 2006 Canadian AGM in a talk given by Norman Kalinski for her contribution to the Canadian Welsh Pony. She had 9 foals for Ardmore: Supreme and Champion of Champions Ardmore Spellbound, Ardmore Wizard (influential sire on the daughters of Liseter Merry Lad at Mrs. Sophie DuPont's, JLA Farm), Ardmore Magic Wand, Ardmore Enchantress, Ardmore Sabine, Ardmore Witchway, Ardmore Bewitched, Ardmore Magician, and Ardmore Magic Man. Her foals and grand foals are still leaving their mark on the Welsh Pony World.
Blue Belle was next bred to Grand Champion Seamair Bonanza and the following year 1971, a colt named Chaparral's Blue Print was born. Blue Print became a Grand Champion in halter and went on to win under saddle before he was bred and produced champions himself.
He sired 23 foals - 16 purebreds & 7 crossbreds. His most noted colt was 3 times California State Champion Chaparral's Centurion whose record is still unbeaten today against purebred Welsh and Open competition.
Centurion went on to produce two Grand Champion foals before we gelded him. Grand Champion Chaparral's Royal Commander who is a halter, jumping and driving champion and Grand Champion Chaparral's Queen Bee who's TRIBUTE is listed on this website separately, showing the legacy Talybont Blue Belle started for Chaparral many, many years ago. Queen Bee's foals, grand foals and great grand foals are carrying on that tradition today here at Chaparral and for many studs across the country.
